Rehearsals will begin in the fall although cast members will be asked for their availability for the summer months in case it is convenient to begin learning the music and dialogue ahead of a September rehearsal schedule.

Below are some descriptions about the main characters. Please keep in mind that this is an ensemble show and that several roles may be double-cast. Also please keep in mind that this show requires a large chorus and there are several possibilities for casting secondary characters.

MATILDA WORMWOOD An imaginative and clever child. She is reflective and ponders the meaning behind her life. Wise beyond her years. Hungry to learn and astutely aware of the injustices of the world. Must be a strong performer, singer and carry herself with a maturity that is unusual.

MISS AGATHA TRUNCHBULL Headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School & Miss Honey’s aunt. A famous athlete in her younger days she is a “holy terror” who marches “like a storm trooper with long arms swinging” and is generally feared and carries an “aura of menace.” Typically cast as a male (baritone) actor who requires good physicality and vocal dexterity and enunciation.

MISS JENNIFER HONEY Matilda’s teacher and a niece to Miss Turnchbull. She is quiet and timid yet adored by her students. Miss Honey is a soprano character and should give off a warm glow. She engenders trust trust from all who meet her.

MR. HARRY WORMWOOD A crooked crook of a used car salesman. Matilda’s negligent father who complains and weasels his way through life. Requires “bigger than life” characterization.

MRS. ZINNIA WORMWOOD Obsessed with her amateur ballroom dancing competitions and her dancing partner. Matilda’s disinterested mother. She is loud and garish in her appearance and nature. “What you know matters less than the volume of which what you don’t know is expressed.”

MICHAEL WORMWOOD Matilda’s sibling. Favoured by her parents yet exceptionally dim.

MRS. PHELPS Local librarian who encourages Matilda and gives off a peaceful, nurturing vibe. Generally a non-singing role.

BRUCE BOGTROTTER Classmate who is subject to an unusual punishment from Miss Trunchbull.

LAVENDER Big personality. Female classmate of Matilda. Requires good singing and movement abilities.
